Squilla taulinanus n. sp. (Crustacea, Stomatopoda, Squillidae) from the Burdigalian (Miocene) of Taulignan, south-eastern France
Mantis shrimps (Crustacea: Stomatopoda) are rather rare in the fossil record. Nineteen species have been assigned to Squillidae, of which 12 species have been recorded from the Miocene. We describe herein a squillid, Squilla taulinanus n. sp., from the Miocene of Taulignan, south-eastern France. The exceptionally well-preserved specimen is remarkable in apparently having abdominal somites 5–6 c...
متن کاملThe rare mantis shrimp Areosquilla indica (Hansen, 1976) (Crustacea, Stomatopoda) from the Great Barrier Reef: first Australian records of the genus and species.
The rare mantis shrimp genus Areosquilla is recorded from Australia for the first time based on nine specimens of A. indica (Hansen, 1926) collected from the Great Barrier Reef. Morphological variation beyond that observed in previous accounts is reported. The present record and other recent discoveries bring the Australian stomatopod fauna to 152 species and 68 genera.
متن کاملContests with deadly weapons: telson sparring in mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda).
Mantis shrimp strike with extreme impact forces that are deadly to prey. They also strike conspecifics during territorial contests, yet theoretical and empirical findings in aggressive behaviour research suggest competitors should resolve conflicts using signals before escalating to dangerous combat. We tested how Neogonodactylus bredini uses two ritualized behaviours to resolve size-matched co...
متن کاملThe evolutionary history of Stomatopoda (Crustacea: Malacostraca) inferred from molecular data
The crustacean order Stomatopoda comprises seven superfamilies of mantis shrimps, found in coastal waters of the tropics and subtropics. These marine carnivores bear notable raptorial appendages for smashing or spearing prey. We investigated the evolutionary relationships among stomatopods using phylogenetic analyses of three mitochondrial and two nuclear markers. Our analyses recovered the sup...
متن کاملPreliminary observation of mantis shrimp breeding success in captivity
Mantis shrimps (Crustacea: Stomatopoda) are potential aquaculture species as they are constantly fished from the wild to satisfy demands of the seafood industry. Breeding capacity of mantis shrimps in captivity is scarce and implies a gap in this area to achieve successful aquaculture practices for this species. A preliminary observation was conducted with locally obtained mantis shrimps Miyake...
